Whether you believe in fate or not, never take what it gives us for granted, and I know what I’m talking about. The world around us operates in duality, not only do nice things happen to us, but we often have to deal with unpleasantness as well. Much of our lives are lived under stress, in pain, in fear for ourselves or our loved ones. We are also apprehensiveof when those not-so-nice moments will come to us again, which can be quite intense for us in a negative sense. We fear so much that we quite often forget the joy and lightness of being, yet it is so simple. Just stop, take a breath and look around you. Most of us are surrounded by loving family and friends. Each of us is surrounded by beautiful nature and places to stop and just be. Being in the present moment is all we have. If we focus on the experience of being in the present moment, fears of the past and fears of the future will stop growing and perhaps in time disappear altogether.
You’re probably tapping on your forehead as you read this or shaking your head in disbelief. However, let’s give it a try, here and now. Sit back and think about what makes you happy. When do you feel good? When exactly do you feel love permeating your whole body, making you feel peace, harmony and complete belonging to the world? What is it that puts a smile on your face that just won’t go away? Is it the moment when you are surrounded by breathtaking nature or when you observe the calm ocean? Is it the moment when you lie in the safe embrace of a loved one? Or a lazy Sunday afternoon when time stands still thanks to your friends? Maybe it’s a quiet moment with a book or time on the yoga mat that brings you joy; or maybe it’s a quick run up the highest hill in the area.
Whatever it is, it’s the present moment. It’s the moment we live – here and now, regardless of all the stories of the past and fears of the future. We are truly living life, and that’s what makes us happy, because life is addictive. When we experience beautiful moments, we logically want more and more. We don’t want the sadness, the pain, the drama. Even though difficult moments are a part of our lives, we still have a choice in how we approach them, eliminating some unnecessary worries. And if we find ourselves in a situation that we can’t move on from, even if we stand on our heads, it’s good to stop and remember all the feelings of peace and harmony that our moments of happiness and love bring us.
Why? Because life is worth it, even when it’s damn hard sometimes. And because everything passes.
